Today I’m going take a look at a wonderful new book that celebrates The Monkees in comic book form.

Yes, you heard me correctly the good old-fashioned, old-schooled comic book that was available at most grocery and dime stores. For a mere $.15 to $.20 cents kids of all ages enjoyed not only super heroes and other fantastic creatures but many a classic TV show as well.

The Monkees, the pop/rock TV phenomena of the late 1960s, were featured in 17 colorful comic books published by Dell Comics that came out between 1966 and 1969. Much like the TV show these comic books featured the same kind of zaniness featured on the show and were a fun extension of the madcap characters portrayed so well by Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz.

This year in celebration of The Monkees 60th Anniversary “The Monkees Comic Book Book: Reference Book and Price Guide” has just been recently released. This one of my favorite of all the new anniversary releases that have come out so far and well worth seeking out if you’re a comic book/Monkees fan.

Back in the day, many days ago of course, I was a big fan of comic books and one of my favorite comics was of course The Monkees. I only owned a few of them but the ones I did own became read so much that covers were torn and lost and those well-loved fragments still fill up a small drawer of a dresser that holds many a cherished childhood memory.

I only recently became aware of the existence of this book and was thrilled to hear that not only is it a price guide and reference book about the Monkees comics but that it contained all 17 comics originally released by Dell, including the covers.

All the comics have been “remastered” so to speak as the intro to the book says and are now fully restored to bold bright colors that look fantastic. 

There are some differences in colors on these new versions and while they aren’t exactly one hundred percent the same as the original editions they are really a fun read and a much more affordable way to dip back in time to read them as the original comics themselves can be a bit pricey if you want to track down pristine copies.

Some purists may be put off by the revamped style of the new versions but I had a blast flipping through the book.

Below I have compared some pages of an original comic book and right below that the restored versions from the new book so you can see what was done to the original comics.

It is truly fantastic that these old comic books are getting a new lease on life and for those who never owned them this book is a must buy. I’m not sure many Monkees fans have heard of this book so I thought I’d feature it here and hopefully if you want one you can get one before they’re gone.
